One of Philly’s most historic baseball fields is in disarray. Neighborhood activists are asking for help.
The Philadelphia Inquirer spoke with Give and Go co-founders, Andre Wright and Caleb Jones, and baseball coach, Josh Throckmorton, about the challenges faced by our baseball program. They discuss the need for better field maintenance and improved coordination with the city to create safe spaces that kids and communities can be proud of.

Smith Playground Honors Give and Go Co-Founders During Black History Month
Andre Wright and Caleb Jones, co-founders of Give and Go Athletics, were honored as part of the Smith Playground’s “Leaders and Legends” Black History Month exhibit. The fourth annual Leaders and Legends exhibit honored the contributions of local African American leaders across a wide range of fields, including fields whose impact has made Philly a better place to live, work, grow, and play. The exhibit highlighted Andre and Caleb’s commitment to Philly youth and the leadership they provide within the North Philly community.

Wistar’s Education & Training Team Visits Vaux High School to Connect on Life Science Careers
Wistar’s Drs. Kristy Shuda McGuire, dean of biomedical studies, and David Zuzga, associate dean of biomedical studies, spent an evening with students at Vaux Big Picture High School in north central Philadelphia to discuss all the STEM job opportunities available and for the taking here in the region. The Lower North Philadelphia CDC is a key partner, providing event coordination and sponsorship, as well as being an organization connector. Their friends at Give and Go Athletics brought a great group of students, who took part in the event and should be commended for taking two hours on a 70° day—after school—to learn more about science!

Give and Go Athletics awarded Violence Prevention Grant by Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office
District Attorney Larry Krasner was honored to announce the awarding of $125,000 in grant money to five community-based organizations in support of violence prevention efforts. This first round of grants ($25,000 for each organization) is awarded to the following groups: The Institute for the Development of African American Youth (IDAAY), Give and Go Athletics, Black Women in Sport Foundation, Savage Sisters Recovery, and Mighty Writers.

The Hook is Sports
“In a lot of ways, Give and Go is providing what neighborhoods of wealth have built-in: sports programming, and mental health services,” says Staub, founder of Neighborhood Film Company. “What makes Give and Go particularly unique is that they’re using sports to provide mental health care for kids in neighborhoods of trauma. The hook is sports, but Andre and Caleb are mental health therapists, and the second they have money, they do incredible things with it.”

Youth Sports Officials Work to Stay Connected to Athletes
“This is trauma on top of trauma,” Wright said of the social distancing that has prevented coaches and mentors from gathering youngsters together in structured team settings. “I know how many of these kids need these programs. They need this support. What we need to do now, more than anything, is let them know they still have that support, they still have people who care about them.”
